Pin Video
I was intrigued by the idea of fictionalising the scenes I saw on a video call. These peepholes into people’s homes created the possibility of a story unfolding beyond the scope of the video-call, a potential soapbox drama you could pin to your screen without anyone knowing. What were the private passions lying behind these calmly composed faces?
Frank Bowling was a huge influence while composing this painting, particularly his use of soft washes of intense colour. There is a romance to the colours bleeding into one another, movement in the background that gives way to the intensity of the foregrounded pair. I enjoy the ambiguity of their identity and the uncertainty about where one body ends and another begins. It could be a parent and child, or a romantic couple; a rending heartbreak, a passionate reunion, or a familiar embrace.
